Drovers Crossing Aug.2004 DROVERS CROSSING Reclaiming the PARK

On the northern side of the highway, is the riverbank park that marks the spot where it was decided by the townsfolk in the early 1900's to create a cobbled crossing for drovers take their stock east or west and avoid the dusty trek through the township.

The park was much used and was a pleasant stop for tourists and passers by until October 2004 when the bushfires that were threatening the village raced through the park, destroying everything.

As the Gatton Shire Council could not allocate funds at that time to redeem the park, the Helidon & District Progress Association decided to take on the project. With the aid of Council, where possible, and many very early Saturday mornings, the park was cleared, mulched and replanted. This is an ongoing endeavour but the benefits are already being felt within the community.
